Educated Tea Makers! Research Report

The 'FileMaker Educated Tea Makers – IT Skills: From School to Work' report surveyed over 1,000 recent school leavers and graduates and found that while IT confidence is high amongst school leavers, there is a gap between GCSE and A-Levels where no new IT skills appear to be taught.

Tony Speakman, regional manager, Northern Europe, FileMaker commented, "Schools are missing a key opportunity to provide further training in more advanced skills to a ready and willing generation of students who want to learn more specialised functions as they progress into the workplace."

Natural History Museum Evolves Unique Research Methodology with FileMaker

Researchers in the Natural History Museum's Department of Zoology have just completed two externally funded studies into parasite evolutionary biology with the help of FileMaker. One focused on organising the collection of tissue specimens for gene sequencing, while the other involved charting the lifecycles of parasitic worms.

"The setup of FileMaker means that you don't have to be a computer genius to understand it. FileMaker forces you to be organised and efficient, and is absolutely pivotal to the success of the molecular biology part of our research group." Dr Tim Littlewood, Parasitologist and Individual Merit Researcher, Department of Zoology, Natural History Museum.

Youngest FileMaker Certified Developer?

Bobak Kamei was possibly the youngest certified FileMaker developer when he passed his FileMaker certification at the age of just 17. Now aged 19 he is moving on, demonstrating how FileMaker really is a tool for life.

"I started using FileMaker at school for my ICT homework and projects and then quickly progressed to developing a system for our school library so that my school could manage and track library attendance. I'm now working part time with Cordis Technologies, a FileMaker Business Alliance member who specialise in developing both off-the-shelf and completely customised applications for both UK and Australian clients. I'm looking forward to moving out to Australia shortly to assist developing polished database solutions before starting my studies in Mathematics at Cambridge where I have no doubt FileMaker will continue to be a tool I can apply in my studies."

Truancy Rate 'Highest Since 1997' – Schools that are Fighting Back

In February the BBC Online reported that the Government has released figures which show that truancy rates are at their 'highest since 1997'. It is estimated 63,000 pupils truant a day equating 1% of all school sessions missed without a valid reason.

Whilst many schools are still struggling to combat this problem, some schools have taken matters into their own hands and adopted systems that enables them to track pupil attendance.

Croxteth Community Comprehensive School has rolled out electronic registration to provide staff with a tool to combat lateness, spot truancy and record attendance.

Andy Marsh, ICT Applications Manager at Croxteth Comprehensive commented, "Student attendance is now easily tracked and truancy quickly spotted. Users have picked up the system extremely easily. After the introduction of the attendance module, we had teachers, most with little or no computer experience, taking registers in minutes."
