Blackpool Sixth Form College

Blackpool Sixth Form College, the only specialist A-level college in Fylde, Lancashire, has built its entire management information system around FileMaker, allowing it to handle all aspects of its 1600 full time students and staff records, course details, timetables and examination results.

According to Alan Lloyd, Vice Principal of Resources & Information Systems: "We have used FileMaker to run our entire management information system for many years. Recently, we have added a complete tutor management system, written in FileMaker, which we call Alliance. Around 100 tutors are using laptops with FileMaker-based Alliance Client software to register students, send messages, record marks, handle progress reviews and send disciplinary referrals if required."

In addition, FileMaker is used by over 300 ICT and Computing students in the college to extend database and applications knowledge.

FileMaker Consults with Exam Boards and LEAs to Develop Curriculum Materials

FileMaker has a very broad base of customers in education including schools, colleges and universities across the UK. However, we are aware that typically FileMaker is used to help with management tasks. There are also a growing number of teachers using FileMaker Pro for lesson planning and other teacher related activities. However, the number of classroom or curriculum materials that have been created in FileMaker are still in a minority.

We have a genuine desire to find ways where FileMaker can be a learning tool rather than just another 'subject' that students 'have to' learn. We believe that FileMaker can be a tool to assist in information gathering, organisation, understanding and revision – across all subjects not just as ICT course material.

In an effort to make this a reality, FileMaker has recently consulted with some Local Education Authorities, exam boards and e-skills UK. The purpose of these visits is to learn what part FileMaker and databases can play in today's curriculum.

If you would like to make a comment to us about developing curriculum materials using FileMaker, please email us.

Ocarina Tunes into FileMaker

The term 'ocarina' (meaning 'little goose') was first used when Italian teenager, Guiseppe Donati, invented a 'submarine-shaped' clay flute in 1853. Today, ocarinas are used in schools throughout the world and are widely recognised as the most effective way of introducing children to musical instruments.

Ocarina Workshop was founded in 1983 by husband and wife team David and Christa Liggins. Former teachers, they have worked with ocarinas for over 25 years, publishing a definitive guide to the instrument, as well as launching their own specially designed range of ocarinas. The company publishes music and educational materials, manufactures ocarinas, and has just launched ocarina-teaching software on CD ROM that can be played on whiteboards to large audiences of children.

FileMaker Pro is deployed to deliver all business requirements for Ocarina Workshop: from stock-taking and accounts, to sales, CRM and invoicing.
